Additional notes are indicated in green.

  • Contrasts:
    • “Overtake you” vs “know full well” (v. 2, 4)
    • Peace & safety vs sudden destruction (v. 3)
    • Light vs darkness (v. 4-5)
    • Day vs night (v. 5)
    • Sleep & be drunk vs be alert & sober (v. 6-7)
    • For wrath vs for salvation (v. 9)
    • Died vs live (v. 10)

  1. Be watchful (Mt 24:45-25:13)
    • Watching is a continuous action, not just something done once. For more detailed information on this in Greek, see “Greek Observations.”
    • What to be watchful in?
      • In our attitude and conduct — Be proactive and ready, like servants waiting for their master (Lk 12:36).
        • Stay awake and alert so that we do not fall into spiritual slumber (Rom 13:11).
        • Watch with patient endurance (Lk 21:19; Jas 5:7-8). Some may think Jesus will delay His coming or that He is slow to keep His promise (Mt 24:48; 2 Pet 3:9). However, if we use that as an excuse to follow after our lusts (2 Pet 3:3-4), we will bear the consequences when Jesus comes (Mt 24:50-51; Lk 12:46-47).
      • In our prayers
        • It is through watchful prayers that we will have the strength to escape what is to come and overcome the tribulation and deception of the end times (Lk 21:36).
  2. Be ready through servitude (Mt 25:14-46).
    • Serve God faithfully with our talents.
      • Reflect: What talents has God given to you? How can you utilize these abilities to serve in the ministry and build up the people around you?
        • Creative ability: singing, playing an instrument, writing, photography, videography, graphic design, drawing
        • Administrative/technical ability: organizing, planning/coordinating, audio/visual skills, proficiency with technology, programming, financial management, or languages
        • Relational ability: talking or evangelizing to strangers or new people, counseling, mentoring, teaching, encouraging others, hospitality
      • Therefore, no matter what talents we have been given or what work we are entrusted, let us use all of our talents to edify one another, glorify God, and abound in the work of the Lord (1 Cor 10:31; 15:58; Col 3:23-24).
    • Serve others diligently in love.
      • What would it look like to serve one another as it mentions in v. 35-36 in today’s context?
        • Ex: Feeding the hungry and quenching the thirsty — aside from providing physical food and drink, we can also nourish one another spiritually through intercessory prayers, studying the word of God together, fellowship, and sharing testimonies or encouragements.
        • What ideas can you think of for…inviting in a stranger? Clothing the naked? Visiting the sick? Going to those in prison?
